How to prepare
Make an emergency plan and prepare an emergency kit so you can be self-sufficient for a minimum of 72 hours. Use the links below to get started:
What to do during a power outage
Check the BC Hydro website for a list of current outages. If your outage isn’t listed, contact BC Hydro:
- Phone: 1 800 BCHYDO (1 800 224 9376)
- Mobile phone: *HYDRO (*49376)
- Online: Report it online
If you are inside when an outage occurs:
- If temperatures are low, keep the heat in by avoiding opening doors and windows.
- Keep fridge and freezer doors closed to keep food cold / frozen longer.
- Use battery-powered or hand-cranked flashlights or LED candles as a light source. If you use real candles, keep them out of reach of children and pets, and do not leave them unattended.
- Switch off appliances, electronics and lights to prevent a power surge when service is restored.
- Listen to a local station for warnings, advice and instructions on a battery-operated or hand-cranked radio or use your computer or mobile device to access outage information.
If you are outside when an outage occurs:
- Stay back at least 10 metres from downed power lines.
- Report downed power lines to 9-1-1.
What to do after a power outage
- Avoid immediately turning on your heating system, electronic devices and appliances to give the electrical system a chance to stabilize.
- Reset your clocks, automatic timers, and alarms.
- Check the Government of Canada website for information on handling refrigerated and frozen food after an outage.
- Re-stock any supplies you used in your emergency kit.
