If your home has been damaged by a flood, it’s important to restore it as soon as you can, to prevent further damage to both the house and your possessions, and to minimize the risk of health-related issues.
Quick tips for flood restoration
Before re-entering your home
Do not return home until you have been given permission by local authorities. If the main power switch was not turned off before the flooding, do not re-enter your home until a qualified electrician tells you it’s safe to do so.
Cleaning up
Flood water may be contaminated with sewage or other pollutants, so it’s important to maintain good hygiene while you clean.
- Water — Drain water from your home slowly to prevent further structural damage to your home
- Heating and appliances — Do not heat your home above 4C until all water is removed, and do not use flooded appliances until they've been checked by an electrician
- Dirt and debris — Remove all debris and soaked materials, and remove drywall, paneling and insulation at least 50cm above the high water line
- Floor drains — Flush and disinfect floor drains and sump pumps with detergent and water
- Structures — Ventilate or dehumidify the house until it is completely dry and rinse and clean all floors as quickly as possible
- Carpets and furniture — Carpets must be dried within the first two days
