A variety of wild animals, including bears, coyotes, skunks, raccoons, and cougars live on the North Shore. You may see wild animals on your property, looking for food or somewhere warm to sleep.
How to Prepare
Most bears killed by conservation officers have had access to human food. Make your home less inviting to wildlife by:
- Keeping garbage inside until collection day
- Composting food scraps properly.
- Picking fruit from fruit trees.
- Storing pet food indoors.
- Keeping your organics cart and barbeque clean.
What to do if you see wildlife
- Remain calm.
- Back away slowly, preferably in the direction you came from. Do not run.
- Bring children and pets to an area of safety. Give the animal escape options.
