A variety of wild animals — cougars, bears, coyotes, skunks, and raccoons — live on the North Shore. You may see wild animals on your property, looking for food or somewhere warm to sleep.
Risk of wildlife encounters on the North Shore
Skunks and raccoons are often seen near homes on the North Shore. Bears and coyotes occasionally wander into neighbourhoods. Cougar sightings are rare, but do happen.
How to prepare
Most bears killed by conservation officers have had access to human food.
There are a number of ways to make your home less inviting to wildlife, including:
- Keeping garbage inside until collection day
- Composting food scraps properly
- Picking fruit from fruit trees
- Storing pet food indoors
- Keeping your barbecue clean
What to do if you see bears or other wildlife
- Remain calm.
- Back away slowly, preferably in the direction you came from. Do not run.
- Bring your children and pets to an area of safety. Give the animal escape options.
